Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it for different reasons, including pain management, inflammation, blood flow, digestion issues and overall wellbeing, as a type of deep-tissue massage. The cups can be made of glass, bamboo, earthenware or silicone. The practice of cupping dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Middle Eastern cultures as far back as 1550 B.C.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF CUPPING
There are two main categories of cupping performed today:
Dry cupping – is a suction-only method
Wet cupping – may involve both suction and controlled medicinal bleeding
Modern cupping is often performed using glass cups that are rounded like balls and open on one end. Your therapist will put a flammable substance (like herbs, or paper in a cup) and set it on fire, and put the cup down on your skin. As the flame goes out, the cup cools and creates a vacuum which causes your skin to rise and redden as your blood vessels expand; the cup is generally left in place for up to 3 minutes.
More recently, versions of cupping using a rubber pump instead of fire to create the vacuum inside the cup, which is become increasingly popular. These silicone cups can be moved from place to place on your skin for a massage like effect.
Wet cupping creates a mild suction by leaving a cup in place for approximately 3 minutes. When the therapist removes the cup, they then use a small scalpel to make light, tiny cuts on your skin and complete a second suction to draw out a small quantity of blood.
Cupping may cause temporary bruising and soreness, depending upon the degree of suction created by the vacuum and the level of internal stagnation. According to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), this would be a favorable outcome, suggesting the treatment has successfully removed toxins and stagnation. The cups are removed by lifting one edge, which allows air in and breaks the seal and vacuum.
SUPRISING BENEFITS OF CUPPING
There are many benefits of cupping; a famous Chinese saying is “Cupping and Acupuncture, more than half of the ills cured”, supporting traditional Chinese medicine. The old Chinese medical maxim holds that pain results from congestion, stagnation, and blockage of Qi, or vital energy, vital fluids, lymph, phlegm, and blood. If pain is the essence of disease, then suffering is a result of obstructed or irregular flow in the body. Therefore, cupping is a method of breaking up the blockages to restore the body’s natural flow of energy.
it helps resolve chronic muscle tightness and pain faster than massage therapy alone
It increases circulation
it encourages tissues to release toxins
it reduces anxiety
it can reduce stretch marks and scars
it can improve varicose veins and spider veins
it can clear congestion and help treat asthma
it can clear colon blockages and aid digestion
WHAT IS ABDOMINAL CUPPING AND HOW DOES IT HELP DIGESTION?
Abdominal Cupping is an excellent therapy for digestion related problems. The suction-pulling power of negative pressure over the abdomen stimulates the inside of the digestive organs, resulting in an increase of peristaltic action, secretion of digestive fluids and absorption of required nutrients and water, which assists the nourishing of body tissues.
Immediate benefits within the digestive system include:
Clearing colon blockages
Breaking down fatty deposits
Encouraging blood and body-fluid movement in the bowels and internal organs
Soothing the nervous system
Releasing inner emotions
Promoting digestion
Relieving indigestion or heartburn
As stated above, with regular abdominal cupping there is an increase in digestive secretions that enhances peristaltic movement. Cupping will improve appetite, digestion, bile flow and metabolism, aid in the treatment of distension and acidity, helps with conception, relieving constipation, diarrhea, helps IBS, and promotes regularity of the bowels.
The suction reaches up to 4 inches into the soft tissue and organs. It draws out toxins and inflammation from the body to the surface of the skin, where the lymphatic system eliminates them.
WHAT ARE THE MARKS LEFT AFTER CUPPING?
One misinterpretation of the marks that sometimes occur as a result of Cupping are that they are bruises. However, these marks under the skin post cupping, are actually stagnation, dead cellular debris, pathogenic factors, and most importantly – toxins being drawn out of the biosystem. Some capillary seepage occurs but it is minimal to the acidic agents being removed.
Cupping stretches open, rather than closing the lymphatic vessels, this action increases the movement of lymph locally and systemically with cumulative treatments. Increasing lymphatic output increases your immune systems ability to detoxify the body and respond to stressors from disease, chemicals, stress and electromagnetic fields. Studies have been done where blood test have been performed to measure the levels of toxins, pesticides and acids being drawn out of the body with shocking results.
SIDE EFFECTS OF CUPPING
The side effects of cupping are fairly mild. Bruising should be expected, but skin should return to looking normal within 10 days. Other potential side effects include mild discomfort, skin infection, or burns. However, a trained health professional will apply an antibiotic ointment and bandage to prevent an infection.
